It In very broad terms, the gradual breakdown of our DNA causes aging. The TILDA longevity study out of the University of Dublin suggests that how we age is 20% genetic and predestined, or if you like, preprogrammed into us. Again using the TILDA study wording, the other 80% is what it calls epigenetic which means the activities of our DNA is affected by our cells and that interaction (good and bad) is a function of how we live.
It won’t surprise anyone to know that diet and exercise are key elements in this equation but there is a lot more to it. Things like a sense of community, maintaining long term friendships, sleep, and purpose, all play vital parts to our longevity journey.
